Gilroy Garlic Festival
Matt and I attended the Gilroy Garlic Festival this past Sunday afternoon. The festival is dedicated to all things garlic… from food to merchandise!
We rode the motorcycle out to Gilroy. This city produces more garlic than anywhere else in the world. Matt and I started out with some garlic bread twists with ranch dressing. Then we headed to get some garlic fries, garlic shrimp and garlic sausage. The food was really good, but everything was fried! We walked around and looked at the vendors’ tents. One lady was selling framed exotic butterflies, and another had made framed pictures using leaves, flowers and other natural items.
Matt really wanted a garlic braid, so we walked over to the tent. We ended up buying 1 lb. of garlic for $1!! And, you know that if it came from the festival, it will be good!
We were about ready to leave when we walked past a cooking contest. The “professional” cooks let some amateurs take over. The goal was to see who could make the flame in their pan climb the highest. Matt took some cool pictures of the event.
We finished the day with a final festival delicacy… garlic ICE CREAM!!! Yes, indeed, we braved the almond-garlic ice cream. It was confusing to our taste buds, and it had a spicy after-taste.
All in all, we had a good time hanging out at the festival. But, once you’ve seen it, you don’t really need to make it an annual event. Check out our pics!
Wow, this sounds really fun. I would have loved it. Sounds like some cool crafts and I love garlic, but no thanks on the garlic ice cream. Of course I love fried food but not on my current Weight Watchers diet, bummer.
After looking at the photos I would love to see the deep fried fish tacos. I have always wanted to try one of these. They talk about them all the time on Food Network and I’ve never had one. Sounds really good to me, I love fish and anything fried.
Looks like that was a fun time. Somewhat reminds me of the Chilympiad in San Marcos, where people would bring their chili for contest and you’d go around and taste it all.
Maybe we could go to the garlic festival when we’re out there sometime, I love garlic, it sounds good and looked fun!
I just can’t believe we didn’t find the deep fried garlic until I was already full! That’s what I was looking for the whole day.
